Etsy Shop Tips: Descriptions that are 100% Y-O-U
As I mentioned in yesterday's post, over 50% of Etsy's traffic is now coming from mobile devices, so you have to make sure your photos are awesome and communicative. Even though that's a pretty overwhelming stat, there are still going to be those people who prefer browsing + buying from an actual computer (including me! gasp!), so you have to make sure you're catering to them as well. The best way to do that is through your descriptions.
MAKE YOUR DESCRIPTIONS 100% Y-O-U.
You still want to clearly convey all the pertinent information about your listing, including size, use, color, etc. But put yourself in the buyer's shoes for a minute (yes, I know I ask you to do that a lot). Isn't it much more interesting to read those details in a voice that is uniquely the seller's? Doesn't a funny or story-like description make you want to stay on the listing longer, or better yet, make you want to explore the rest of the shop and find out more about the seller?
I know I've fallen down the rabbit hole of clicking from one listing to the next in a certain seller's shop just because I wanted to see what they had to say about each one! It leaves me feeling a connection with the maker and a sense of "hey, we could totally be friends"! And wouldn't you want to buy from someone who you feel drawn to rather than someone who has a bullet-point style listing description with ZERO personality?
So, find your own unique voice when writing your product descriptions! You're awesome, your products are awesome, and your buyers need to know that. Describe it like you're telling a friend about it. Brag about it. Tell the story behind it. Sure, it might take a little extra time + effort, but it will connect you to your audience and make a huge difference in the long run by showing that you put care into every aspect of your business.
Okay, now it's your turn to talk! What kinds of things would you like to see covered in future business posts? Leave me a comment and let me know what your biggest struggle is as a shop owner / entrepreneur. This is your space, too, so don't hold back!
xo, Christen
